Bar Elba - Waterloo

Cocktail Bar | London | England | United Kingdom

The cocktail bar "Bar Elba - Waterloo" in London was a popular rooftop meeting spot in the Waterloo district, known for its lively atmosphere, creative cocktails, and impressive views over the city. The name of the bar is a reference to the Mediterranean island of Elba, where Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled in 1814 with 600 followers and his horse Marengo - a story that gave the place a playful, historical touch. This Napoleon theme was also reflected in the decoration, which created a casual, party-oriented mood with colorful murals, neon colors, and witty phrases like "Liberté, Égalité, Rosé".

The bar was located on the rooftop of a building and offered a spacious terrace with views of the London skyline, including iconic landmarks such as The Shard and St. Paul’s Cathedral. The design was modern and functional, with a large wooden floor, communal tables, and a mix of covered and open areas. Thanks to a retractable roof, the bar was usable year-round - a breezy hotspot in the summer and equipped with heaters and cozy extras like blankets in the winter. The beer garden was one of the largest in central London and offered a relaxed oasis in the midst of a bustling environment.

The drink offering was a central attraction. Bar Elba was known for its extensive cocktail menu, which included both classic and innovative creations - from fruity sangrias to frozen cocktails. The daily happy hour, offering two cocktails for the price of one, was particularly popular, making the bar a favorite for after-work drinks. In addition to cocktails, there was a selection of craft beers, wines, and spirits to complement the offering. The drinks were freshly made, occasionally leading to longer waiting times, but appreciated by guests for their quality.

The bar also had a lot to offer in terms of food. The menu, often referred to as "Happy Patty", included typical pub dishes with a modern twist, such as burgers, tacos, hot dogs, and snacks for sharing. The food was uncomplicated but delicious and catered to groups looking to enjoy the evening together. The quality was solid, even though the kitchen was not considered a gourmet experience - the focus was clearly on the social aspect and complementing the drinks.

The atmosphere at Bar Elba was lively and diverse. It attracted a mixed crowd - from commuters to tourists to groups celebrating birthdays or company events. Regular events like bottomless brunches on weekends, where unlimited prosecco and cocktails were served, as well as rooftop cinema nights, added to the attraction. Live music and DJ sets enhanced the party atmosphere, especially on Fridays and Saturdays when the bar was often full. Despite the high number of visitors, the atmosphere was rarely felt as overcrowded, as the large space provided plenty of room.

The service was considered friendly and attentive, with individual staff members like Ajay, Valentina, or Gareth often praised by guests for their warmth and efficiency. Free shots or small gestures like distributing blankets on cooler evenings added to the positive experience. However, there were also occasional criticisms, such as slow waiting times during peak hours or the location of some seats in drafty areas. Nonetheless, overall satisfaction prevailed, mainly due to the combination of views, drinks, and ambiance.

Bar Elba was also popular for events and could be rented for private parties or corporate events either entirely or partially. With a capacity of up to 600 people, it was ideal for large groups, and special "party pods" offered an intimate alternative for smaller gatherings. Its proximity to cultural highlights such as the Old Vic Theatre and the Southbank made it attractive for pre- or post-theater visits as well.

Unfortunately, Bar Elba - Waterloo is now permanently closed. However, it remains a place remembered for creating unforgettable moments over the years - whether through the spectacular views, creative cocktails, or lively atmosphere. For many, it was a highlight of the London rooftop scene, making the city accessible from above while always maintaining a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere.
